History of the Casino

The Casino has its roots in the very history of the City of Lugano, adapting over time to various social changes.

It all began in 1804, when the first gaming room in Lugano was opened: people played biribisso, bassetta and dice. In 1885, the Lugano Theatre was founded, a building intended for theatrical and musical performances, dance parties, with a café and restaurant inside. In 1912, the theatre obtained a licence to run small games and in 1922 changed its name to Casino Kursaal. That is when, in 1970, the municipality became its majority shareholder. After 22 years, slot machines were introduced, while in 1993 big games were launched in Switzerland and the Lugano Casino obtained a type A licence.

Casino Lugano SA, as we know it today, was opened on 29 November 2002. What we are is the result of what we have been and will always be part of our DNA.
